چکیده

Algorithmic mechanism design considers distributed settings where the participants, termed agents, cannot be assumed to follow the protocol but rather their own interests. The protocol can be regarded as an algorithm augmented with a suitable payment rule and the desired condition is termed truthfulness, meaning that it is never convenient for an agent to report false information. Motivated by the applications, we extend the usual one-parameter and multiparameter settings by considering agents with private capacities: each agent can misreport her cost for “executing” a single unit of work and the maximum amount of work that each agent can actually execute (i.e., the capacity of the agent). We show that truthfulness in this setting is equivalent to a simple condition on the underlying algorithm. By applying this result to various problems considered in the literature (e.g., makespan minimization on related machines) we show that only some of the existing approaches to the case “without capacities” can be adapted to the case with private capacities. This poses new interesting algorithmic challenges.

Design of broadband virtual private networks: Model and heuristics for the B-WiN

We investigate the problem of designing survivable broadband virtual private networks that employ the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol to route the packages. The capacities available for the links of the network are a minimal capacity plus multiples of a unit capacity. Given the directed communication demands between all pairs of nodes, we wish to select the capacities in a such...

CORC Report TR-2006-01: Short Version Optimal Procurement Mechanisms for Divisible Goods with Capacitated Suppliers

The literature on procurement auctions typically assumes that the suppliers are uncapacitated (see, e.g. Dasgupta and Spulber, 1990; Che, 1993). Consequently, these auction mechanisms award the contract to a single supplier. We study mechanism design in a model where suppliers have limited production capacity, and both the marginal costs and the production capacities are private information. We...

Provisioning a Virtual Private Network Under the Presence of Non-communicating Groups

Virtual private network design in the hose model deals with the reservation of capacities in a weighted graph such that the terminals in this network can communicate with one another. Each terminal is equipped with an upper bound on the amount of traffic that the terminal can send or receive. The task is to install capacities at minimum cost and to compute paths for each unordered terminal pair...

The impact of private accommodation on economic development of tourist destination-the case of Dubrovnik-Neretva County

Private accommodation capacities are a growing segment of the lodging industry in Croatia. In private accommodation capacities 2,684 million tourists were registered in 2010, there were 19,4 million overnight stays, which makes 25% of total arrivals and 34% of total overnights. Although studies have been made on economic impact of tourism on a destination (at the national level), the issues of ...

Optimal Procurement Auctions of Divisible Goods with Capacitated Suppliers

The literature on procurement auctions (reverse auctions) typically assumes that the suppliers are uncapacitated (see, e.g. Dasgupta and Spulber, 1990; Ankolekar et al., 2005; Chen, 2004; Che, 1993). Consequently, these auction mechanisms award the contract to a single supplier. We consider a model where suppliers have limited production capacity, and both marginal costs and the production capa...
